THE MUSIC YOU ARE HEARING or are about to hear was composed by a 78-year man who never had a music lesson in his life. For reasons known to him alone (and having to do with his prayer life we are told) he decided one day to try his hand at music composition. This all reminds one of the joke about the man who, when asked if he could play the violin, replied, "I don't know. I never tried." The individual in question does not want to be identified because, as he says, he feels he is only a "secondary cause" of these pieces, primarily responsible only for their deficiencies.
The opening piece and the two pieces below (and the ten or so others from his hand, some to be included in a subsequent issue of the on-line journal, Logos Review), are not the sort you are likely to hear anywhere else. And it would be interesting to know if you think they work, musically speaking. They were all composed in short creative bursts over the span of two months or so earlier this year (2008).
Their author describes the first piece below as "angels singing joyously as they accompany Mary (and her donkey) on her journey to Bethlehem. At one point Mary joins in for a few measures, and even her donkey gets to sing a few notes to express its own joy." Listen to this piece in particular and let us know what you think.
